Unfortunately, no one can be told what spacetime is. You have to see it for yourself. Ok, - sorry I can't resist, - but please let me try: Spacetime is defined by the display-space, the amount of frames and the timespan of a frame, expressed in the toolbox as traditional FPS - frames per second. The concept is to start a feedback cycle from actions in spacetime, recognizing the result, filter and refine it, recognize something, amplify aspects and do so again. Of course this may also be partly composed of copies of the visual existing world, - but the aim is to develop skills to go towards more symbolic and abstract representations. The best way is to begin touching, to start the feedback cycle. It is a form of meditation, - you will be surprised what structures will emerge from your mind. This emerging spacetime structures are one goal of XAN. Of course XAN can also be used for other reasons. MODES SPACETIME To explore spacetime, start XAN, tap the "play" square, switch the toolbox off by tilting your iPad/iPhone/iPod away from you and then back and start touching. Experiment with the amount of frames and the FPS. The FPS defines approximately how your touch actions will become quantized into the time dimension. FRAME by FRAME To explore the frame by frame mode, start XAN and start touching. There is a "copy touch to next frame" function at the toolbox. Use this to mark certain touches into the next frame if you need continuity on some aspects. And there is a "copy frame to next frame" function if you need absolute stability. Frame by frame works best IMHO when you first sketch the idea very raw, but complete in time. Finally adjust the frame amount to fit the creation. After you are satisfied by playing and retouching you have a secure timebase and now you would refine the details frame by frame. COMBINATION Very interesting effects can be achieved by using combinations of spacetime and frame by frame mode. |
